Alright Welcome back to the Financially Adjusted podcast. I have a special guest today. Her name is Carrie Saunders. Um We have become friends through um having online businesses and she is someone that is so good to know and so good for business owners to know. Um As chiropractors you're always thinking about ways to grow your business and Carrie is a wealth of information when it comes to that. Um She…
has a business, BCS Engineering, um where she helps…
e commerce and online business owners drive revenue growth, by simplifying and innovating their tech and she has a podcast - E-commerce Made Easy. And she just hit her hundredth episode not too long ago so be sure to tune into that. Uh We are gonna get into um some talk about SEO today as the title of this podcast says, um how SEO can make your income grow and it really can So Carrie's gonna help you to understand SEO and understand how it can help you in your business…Um So Carrie, I will let you um say hi and introduce yourself…
Hi everybody It's great to be on the show Thank you Leslie for inviting me I'm so excited to be on your podcast. As she mentioned we've been growing as friends the past man about a year I think Um we met online as mutual business owners so it's been really great to know Leslie and all the things she does…
Yeah so Carrie, I'll I'll get right into the questions today so that we can help um the listeners understand SEO a little bit better. And I'm gonna learn right along with them because honestly like I know some things about SEO and my husband has done web design stuff in the past And in passing I've heard him say things about SEO but it'll be a learning experience for me as well as the listeners So…uh the first question that I have for you today is for chiropractors who have no idea what SEO even stands for Um can you explain what SEO even is and kind of a start from scratch beginner way and why it matters for um a local business like a chiropractic clinic and why they should pay attention to it.…
Sure So if for those that don't know SEO stands for search engine optimization so it's really the process of helping your website show up when people search for your services that you offer. So when you go to Google or Bing or some of the major search engines and you're searching for chiropractor near me or something like that, that's how you're going to get um visibility if you do SEO well for for that. So, we wanna make sure that we have the right words on our page. Um We wanna make sure we have your location especially for chiropractors because it's a it's called local SEO. So you want to be found by people who are near you. So you wanna make sure that you put your um your address for example So a lot of people a lot of people do put that but you'd need to have it a bit more prominent on a website that needs to be found um locally.
So if I were to search chiropractor near me or chiropractor and then put my zip code in, um we would want like your website to show up so doing SEO for chiropractors is actually really important Because we want to be found easily by the people in our general area. Um
it just makes it a way for you to be found without having to pay for ads. It's a long game, um and it's uh something that can really help build your business in the long term So paying a little bit of attention to it can create a great snowball effect So it doesn't have to be something overwhelming It can be just really simple and we'll we'll go through some simple things that we can do in the interview I think as we talk um but think of it as something easy Just make it easy in your brain and it'll become easy when you try to implement it So I like to have people not, you know…get frozen in the word SEO or search engine optimization because nowadays it's much easier to rank well whereas in the past like you had to know a lot of technical stuff to rank well. You just need to know words pretty much well and have a website that was already set up well So…
That's great. That's that's a helpful explanation because I think a lot of people that hear these buzz words thrown around and they're not really sure what it all means and why it's relevant to them…so it's it's good to know all of the SEOs like the definition and everything because you really are using that to have it put you on the map as a business especially one that you have a physical location and people need to find you in their location so that seems like a pretty darn important part of the business honestly. Yes ma'am And I think it's it's definitely worth learning about and paying attention to…
So as far as…how you can show up on Google…um how does that work like behind the scenes Like what what happens or where where do people put a key words and concern themselves with SEO Like who can help them Where do they put this information…
Right So when and when you're building your website or if you already have one one thing you would need to look for and…It it this might sound a little bit techie but it's really not when you break it down. Think about writing um, a document or a paper to an English teacher. You're going to have like a title for your document You're gonna have headings gonna have subheadings and you're gonna have supporting paragraphs to those headings. So we need to do something similar on our website. So, the title of your website page should say your name of your business your chiropractic you know business name, And ideally since it's chiropractors we wanna have the location too So you could say near Dallas Texas or near Columbus Ohio or you know wherever you might be located So having those words in the title is gonna be great. And then as we look down through like the homepage for example, the heading one which is something you should be able to select when you're creating the content on your page in your application whether it's like WordPress or Wix or something like that, So pick heading one and repeat that information again Maybe not quite verbatim but using the keywords of your name of your business and location is really good Because Google looks at it like kinda like an English feature is gonna be grading your paper They're gonna be looking for the main ideas in your title, your headings and your subheadings so repeating those key words…
which for case of chiropractors is their business name, with the word chiropractor in it because we wanna make sure if it doesn't already have the word chiropractor in it we wanna make sure that you're found as a chiropractor and then near your location So doing that um heading one and then some paragraphs that support it you know what type of chiropractor are What what do you service Do you have nutritional supplements too You know use the words to describe your business like you were talking to a friend, um and make sure you have, uh not two little words but not too much We wanna kinda have that nice conversational balance because Google wants to present to its customers basically the people searching. He wants to present to it interesting pages Things that people are interested in So if you don't have enough information on your page so you just have a sentence or two that's not very interesting for Google So you do wanna have some meat to your content too so into your supplementing um paragraphs to support those headings So…Talk about your different services…Um and one key thing is a lot of people try to fit all the keywords into one page So let's say your website's like the three page website where you got the homepage maybe your services and how to contact you. What I would recommend is if you have different types of services in your chiropractic business you know whether it's nutritional care or you know you know general chiropractic or whether it's, sports injury type of help repair. I would highly encourage you having a page for each service you offer because then you can focus each page on that specific service And…
That's going to help you be found for that specific service in your area. So if you have nutritional wellness supplements to go with your chiropractor care make sure you have a dedicated page for that and do the similar like I was talking about a few seconds ago where the title is exactly what you serve you know what you're producing here for your clients. And then the heading would just gonna be use a similar keyword in it and then we're gonna wanna support it with some words, you know with some body supporting behind it So…
when I I like to tell people to think of it as a writing to their English teacher And then it kind of pulls away like that Oh my goodness Am I doing this right Just think of think of it that way because really that's what Google wants is that we want something interesting to read Something interesting for its consumers to read. So you know, try not to worry too much about am I doing this right for Google? Think about it Am I doing this right for my customers Because Google is servicing your customers and that's what they look for now because they look for Does this look good for a customer to read Right. So those are just some like little tips Um one other additional tip I don't want to forget too is like if you have images…
there's in your software whether it's WordPress Wix Squarespace whatever you might be using there should be a place where you can put alt tag out alt information for that image A lot of people skip that That's actually really important…for not only search engines but also for, um accessibility. So, put in what that describe that picture in your own words. And many times it's a good idea to put those you know put those key words in there put you know chiropractor performing um realignment or something like that You know use the words that you would use as you would describe it as a chiropractor and put those in the images too It's one little tiny tweak you can do that really can make a big difference and adds in with all the other things that you're already doing with like the title and the headings and things like that. Oh that's good to know Um because and I feel called out because I have skipped over doing that I'm like ah I don't need to put that in but so you're saying that's really a good opportunity for you to put a keyword in there So you don't wanna miss that opportunity Yes It very much is though And it it is something really easy to miss and I find a lot of people miss it which is why I wanna mention it. And it's the simple thing to do You know you can you do it once and you you know you don't have to worry about it later…
Yes Definitely. Yeah And I so as far as like what um you know chiropractors are putting out there on their site as far as the information the content…it sounds like it should just flow kind of naturally Like they would be having a conversation or like if somebody asks them what services do you provide and what do you do for your patients? Like it's it's um, natural speak as far as what they would say to somebody in conversation…Yes Correct Because back in the old days I'll call it you know like twenty fifteen years ago It was pretty common to like what was called keyword stuff where you just put those keywords all over the page while all the major search engines completely understand what people used to do and they don't like that They want it to be more human based more conversational based So focusing on that helps relieve the pressure I feel like for somebody when they're making the content for their website plus it also gives them good results…
Okay Awesome. Great knowledge…
oh yes And the uh multiple pages you mentioned for services I thought that was an interesting point…um…for you know chiropractors They they typically have a tab where you know it says services that they're offering but I think many of them have it all in one page So that's a really good tip and probably a great way to advance their their rankings on a web or on a Google search…
Yeah And it's pretty common to put it on on page especially if you only have like three or four But if you can elaborate and make separate pages that's gonna be even better for your search engine results. Yeah I imagine it would That's that's an awesome tip…
And so and the next question I have for you is um what are some…
Simple practical things a chiropractic business owner could do today to improve their SEO without having to hire anybody or pay thousands and thousands of dollars to someone…
Um well besides the tips I've already mentioned there's some other ones that can really help you out. Um we want to make sure that you claim and update your Google business profile because that's many times one of the first things Google will show to somebody even if they have a website is that Google business profile You usually find that on the right side…
when you're searching Sometimes it's underneath the search bar too. Um so just do a quick Google search and ask you know how do I claim a Google business profile and you should be able to find some pretty decent help articles on that on the internet. So make sure all the information is also accurate make sure your phone number your address um all those your hours of operation are all accurate there because that's where people typically look when they're looking for a local business. And then also I would encourage you to find a system…that you can do that you can encourage your happy clients to leave you Google reviews…Because that can help you rank higher locally as well. So whether it's um a coupon you give them maybe you have them on your email list and you um email them you know their appointment reminder but maybe a post appointment, you know follow-up is you know hey if you'd love our services today or yesterday or this week you know please review us on Google It helps spread the word about our business Most people like to help other people.
Um
So, you know requesting reviews because you're not likely to get reviews unfortunately unless you request them, especially good reviews You know people will write um reviews if they're not happy more likely on their own, but when they're happy they don't typically think about writing that review unless they're prompted to. So, we wanna encourage people to write that review for you as well. And then some things like I mentioned already is chiropractor in and then city name or family chiropractic care Like those are some key words you might think of So if you do service families and and children as well make sure you have the word family or children in your key words. So really think about the people you serve and how would they describe themselves when you're coming up with these words that you've put on your website too. And one thing you can do too another additional page you can add to your website which is one helpful for customer service but it also helps um Google is an FAQ page. So, some common questions. So like should I see a chiropractor for migraines?
Or how often should I come in to see a chiropractor So you can like you know try to answer these common questions my people might have…
For, um, you know chiropractor care. And it can help…
people you know Google find you know people find you via Google because they might be asking these questions online So think about what questions might some of my clients be asking like should I see a chiropractor for migraines I that's a pretty I think typical question somebody might ask…um and then you can provide a really good you know answer to that and that's gonna help you be found too…
that's gold I love that advice I wouldn't have thought of that but the FAQ page like everybody in this day and age googles their symptoms and they're always you know googling at first And that's probably a great way to have that information pull up from you know what a chiropractor does and specifically you know if it's a for a certain type of symptom or injury I imagine getting more specific about that is good because then they'll find you a little bit quicker and easier…
Yeah The review the reviews are huge when it comes to SEO I imagine as far as…you know putting you on the map online. And I know a lot of chiropractors do have systems for this. I see review wave as being one of the many systems that people have um but I think any system is better than no system when it comes to reviews because as you know if you're in business at all you know it's for sure hard to get reviews unless you're asking for them specifically. Because Yes, for sure. And when you do it via Google reviews Google sees those reviews and then Google sees that you are important to others so then they show you more and more often So the other systems are great, you know if that's easy but if you can get Google reviews too, that's a bit more gold there. Oh very good to know. Very helpful.…
So, I know a lot of um chiropractors rev rely on referrals. Why should they still care about SEO if word-of-mouth is working for them? Um Like what difference could that make in their business, even if they still have a strong referral…um referral basis coming to them?…Well referrals is obviously great and it is a great way for chiropractors to get um business and probably where they get a majority of their business but referrals aren't always consistent. Um You know, when we get busy and we aren't seeing the people in our circles you know we may not be asked the questions Who's your chiropractor Who's your favorite You know I have this problem. You know oh you know you might respond, well you should see my chiropractor. But if you're not having those conversations to begin with, then the referrals aren't coming in quite as much. So search engine optimization can give you a steady stream of new leads. And like I said a little bit earlier it's a long game So why not have it? Why not have this thing that's working for you in the background…
and then you're not having to…rely on referrals quite as much because then you also have this new stream of people. So, when you get the new stream of people they are gonna potentially refer people to you as well. So, it's kind of this nice snowball effect of you know getting in these brand new people who have not been referred to you at all. But then they start referring. So, you can just see how your business might grow and you know a lot more if you have these this another means of getting people in the door. And even referred clients many times will call you and will use Google and will call you before coming in. So, if your site doesn't show up or it looks outdated, they might move on especially if they haven't been, um at the at the service for a while especially if they haven't been at your practice say for a year or two. And then you know not quite sure if you're in business still and they Google you and you don't show up but then then they're not gonna try to you know dig in there and contact you. So, it even helps the existing clients too and helps them see your hours of operation as well for even existing clients…
So it can really help you stand out from your competitors and build trust online especially on those Google reviews And when your site looks nice and clean and updated and you know, nice and presentable to customers. It doesn't have to be super fancy but if it's clean and looks trustworthy and has you know good content on it that's going to really build that trust in that customer and they'll be more likely to reuse your service or start using your service that they haven't um, used it yet before. So, it's a great way of future proofing your business and just making sure you're still getting um new clients in regularly…
Great advice. Yeah, I think that's so true, especially now that most businesses have websites and you know people really look for that online presence I think it's so important to have as much information and as up to date information as possible especially when you have a physical location and you really wanna build trust, you know when you're helping somebody with with wellness and health…if someone wants to start getting serious about SEO but doesn't have time to learn it and do it themselves implement it themselves um what should they look for in someone that they need to hire to help them? Like What advice can you give as for as reaching out for help with this? Um I'd recommend when you talk to people make sure they understand local SEO…for sure. You don't want just a generic SEO person to help you out. You need somebody who understands locality along with that um, which is very important for chiropractic service you know because you you're normally gonna serve the people that are in your general area that are within you know like an hour or two driving distance maybe a max. So you wanna make sure local SEO they really understand…And they should talk to you about about your goals services and ideal clients…we don't be a little wary if they just jump into technical stuff for SEO you know because as we've talked here on on this podcast episode it's not just about the technical. It's about who do you want to serve What are your goals What are your services?
So they need to understand you and your business to do a good job of SEO for you. Um
And you can ask for examples or results they've gotten from similar businesses as well. Um Make sure that they have…experience doing this because we don't wanna waste our money and you know, spend it on SEO for somebody, you know that's maybe not competent enough to do the local SEO for you. So, ask for examples, ask for referrals, you know see if they have clients they work with that you can talk to. Um Because it's just something it's an investment in your business It really is It's a that's a good long term investment…And then I would be aware beware of anyone who promise says instant results or guarantees rankings…because they should be talking about long term growth…and long term trust with SEO. Um search engine optimization is not…a quick thing It it is a long game And I mentioned that a couple of times you know you when you make an adjustment say today, whenever you're listening to this you might not see that result for three four weeks. It kinda depends upon how popular your website already is in Google. So it may take a bit for Google to pick up the changes you've made. So you wanna you know, look towards somebody who understands the SEO is not an instant results you know because you'll get those people out there that promise instant results and top number one You know you definitely want somebody who can provide results but when they're talking like instant like that that's kind of a little bit of a red flag to be aware that they might be just kind of blowing smoke in your face, um
and it's not really going to be a good fit so looking for somebody who knows that long term, you know understands local SEO and really gets to know your business I think those are like the three main important things when you're looking for a local search engine optimization person. And then if we go back to the FAQ I do wanna mention this too, but there's a little bit more ambitious you know how I talked about having the FAQ with the individual questions…If you have a staff for the time too…
you're gonna really prepare yourself This is a little bit more advanced SEO You're gonna really prepare yourself with SEO. If you have the time and capacity to write one blog article a month, I would say at minimum If you could do it every other week that's even better But if you had like the one article of should I see a chiropractor for you know constant migraines If you had one whole blog article on that that's really gonna pop that question up at the top of search engine optimization. Now if that's too much for you just do the FAQ for now and that's fine But if you have time later and can start being consistent with your blogs, one that shows Google that you're updating your website regularly which means you feel like your website is important So then Google sees it as important as…
well…
And two it shows customers who visit your website Oh they have a new article this month. Oh they have they had an article last month It shows that you care about your business and you were you know trying to provide help via articles on your website as well So a little bit more in advance but if you already have the other things nailed down that would be the next step I would suggest And it's really not a hard one as long as you you know just set the time aside to do one a month I feel like for a chiropractic business probably one a month is probably plenty. Maybe twice a month if you really wanna be ambitious but one a month would really help boost that SEO game um in the long term and it's gonna provide benefits for a long time too…
Yeah I think that that's really great advice because um I think that helps build trust too when there's information out there You know people can hear from you you know your thoughts on a topic on a wellness topic and…um…you know that sounds like it can put you on the map even more with your website…
And and so you can, like like doing the blog post like I know for me and my business and and you we've talked about this as well using chat GPT. As like our marketing assistant which is incredibly helpful and you know if you're short on time and you write a blog post, you don't have time to like really edit it or fine tune it you can always use chat GPT and have that help you…Yes You very much so can And if you go to our podcast e commerce made easy podcast but I have several um, actually podcast episodes on exactly this and one particularly um if you just um search for Samantha Gamble, you're gonna find a really great um episode on how to use chat GPT to help you write blog posts in minutes instead of hours. So that can really cut down your time and you don't really need any technical…skills behind it Uh just some human common sense of being able to talk to somebody when you're basically talking to AI and it can really help Another bonus about the blog…um the blog articles too is you can repurpose those for social media or in your newsletter too. So it can create the foundation for reaching out to your clients and being um
in front of them more often as well And that just helps build trust especially when you're updating like your Facebook page or whatever your you know business social is. As long as you're updating it once a month I feel like for a business like that that's probably plenty but it it shows more trust and also helps Google as well It's it's it's kind of this whole web of a search engine optimization all these little places you touch help build it up but obviously do what you set a goal and do what you can Don't feel overwhelmed that you have to do all the things. Start small and add when you can is what I like to tell our clients. We can't do all the things at once We gotta we just step into it just like when we were learning to walk when we were you know we had to step in to you know be able to pull up and crawl and things like that So um just do a little bit of time and you're gonna see your business really grow as you add each of these components in…
That's so helpful Yeah Just it it's a long game and staying consistent but you know not feeling you like you have to do everything all at once. I think as business owners sometimes we do feel like we have to be in all the places and we have to do all the things but it's, like you said, you just build upon it over time and stay consistent and with the SEO stuff it is, um you know a long game so that's something you wanna be consistent with over time I'm sure. And as far as that manifesting into dollars and seeing that change your income and increase your income…You do have to be patient with that stuff I mean, this could be a significant change for your income over time but it will take learning about it, um implementing it, and making sure you're consistent you know with the SEO on your website. Because I know…I've seen um chiropractors have a lot of success when they have that presence and they're keeping their social media updated their website updated and they're they're grabbing all the opportunities they can to put their services out there and and keep things up to date and fresh…
It can be overwhelming but I think there's there's a lot of businesses out there that help clients do this like yours. Um As far as the pricing goes, I'm sure there are so many different levels of service that that you can find when it comes to SEO website management all of that stuff. Um When it comes to someone who's completely starting out what do you recommend as far as if they are hiring somebody We talked a little bit about that but um can you talk a little more about that and maybe what some pricing might look like? Sure Yeah So what we usually do for new clients for SEO is we will
. We'll suggest um an upfront package where we you know really dive into your your business you know what your goals are and things like that So usually there's like, uh, an upfront cost to get started but then a smaller a much smaller like ongoing say for, you know six months or twelve months, um adjustments as we go. Because like I said earlier, you know, It's not a set it and forget it It's it's you make a change you see how that change affects it and then you adjust from there So it's we usually recommend you know say a a package of about five hundred dollars or so It kinda depends upon how big your website is…
To get started And then you know maybe the monthly is only a hundred or two hundred dollars, um you know for six to twelve months till everything's established So it can be inexpensive and not super expensive. Um There's obviously really expensive packages out there for search engine optimization but I feel like for a chiropractic business that's really not necessary. That would be a bit more appropriate for an e commerce business where they have you know fifty a hundred or so website pages…versus a chiropractic business it's probably gonna have three to ten. Um and or if you have blog posts you know you might have more than that But, um I feel like a smaller package where where's the kick start package and then monthly is really what probably most chiropractors need They don't really need a whole lot because there's not as much content like there would be in a traditional e commerce site…
And is it um trackable as far as like SEO work that's being done. Can you track and tell like how many people are clicking um on certain things…
Yes And I think that and that also kinda brings a good point to that first initial package It depends upon where you already are set up So you can track that using Google Analytics So if Google Analytics isn't set up already on your website then you're gonna want your search engine optimization person to set that up You're also gonna wanna set up Google search console. So those are two of the main ways you can see…you know whether the traffic is increasing um we use um specific software too that will track a website's um specific keyword rankings. So if it's chiropractic care for migraines you know maybe that's a keyword phrase we would track for a specific person that likes to…
tailor their services to people with you know consistent migraines. Um We would track that to see how the ranking is going for that to make sure it's going up as we make adjustments so there's software behind it that can know that these search engine optimization specialists can use to um make sure that you know they're making you know good progress And it's something that you should be able to ask for as as a person receiving the service for search engine optimization you know…
regular updates on how your keywords are being um…you know making progress whether they're going up in the rankings…and uh you know what what types of changes they made to make that possible…
That's great. Yeah And that's that's helpful information along the way Because I think with anything marketing and advertising like you you wanna know if you're having a return on your investment and if certain advertising efforts are working and so um you know it does take time But I always recommend that people, you know they pay attention to on their P and L what that advertising line item is and how heavily you're spending there And it definitely is helpful to track over time what that return on investment is And you know if it's working for you if you should keep that in the budget and if you know if you wanna keep throwing money at a certain efforts. But it sounds like um you know SEO is really something that it's a long game but it's something that you always wanna stick with because it it has to do with your presence you know online and people finding you and trusting you and and that's huge…
Yeah And it it can really you know once you get it going…it's just it's so worth it So like you know it might take six months to get it going depending upon how established your website is but I've just seen so many clients be like wow I don't know where these customers are coming from. I mean unless they really dig into the analytics because you know they just come to them and and you know get their services and it's because people are searching for the information. Yeah. That's fantastic That's such a powerful thing…Mhmm That's so helpful And do you um take on new clients Are you currently taking on new clients? Uh yes We do take on new clients We're currently taking on new clients for search engine optimization and on other website services as well We we kind of do the full gamut over here We've been doing this for over twenty two years um as of this recording.
Um so yes we love helping…Our whole goal is to help online businesses succeed We love to take the tech out of their hands when they don't wanna touch it And you know we obviously will help people if they wanna learn how to do it too We're like we'll teach people how to do it on their own too If they wanna be hands off and you know just do the thing that they're great at which is running their business and servicing their clients, um
we absolutely love helping others be successful and we we feel like we partner with them We just we, We we were walking side by side with them and and helping along the way So we love doing that…
That's so great. And so many business owners need and want that And they have so many hats they wear already They don't wanna take that on as well. But like with anything you know bookkeeping related or financial stuff I always say like…even if you're outsourcing you should understand what's going on in your business have that that base understanding and and nobody can care more about your business than you do but it's so good to be able to outsource to professionals that can help you and then educate you at the same time…And I think you do a great job of that Your podcast is so helpful too. I will definitely link that in the show notes especially that episode that you mentioned um about the blog post.
